| 3 | Arthur Steinmann passed away peacefully at his residence in Nithview Community, New Hamburg on Friday, March 4, 2022. Arthur was born 94 years ago, a son of the late Abraham and Mary (Roth) Steinmann. Predeceased by his beloved wife, Florence (Erb) Steinmann in 2016. Loving father of Esther Steinmann Kennel (Cliff) of Stratford, Pauline Steinmann (Neil Regier) of Waldheim, SK, Jan Steckley (Jeff) of Kitchener, Rosalie Steinmann (Johannes van der Meer) of Akkrum, NL and Ronnie Steinmann (Mindy) of New Hamburg. Dear grandpa and great-grandpa of Andrea Kennel, Dan and Jill Steckley (Oaklynn), Dean and Phoebe Steckley (Lena, Jonah, Niah), Zach and Beth Steckley (Arthur), Karen and Nico Schilder (Bruin, Sija), Alex van der Meer and Samantha van der Meer. Also remembered by the Regier, Friesen, Crawford and Nadeau step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Arthur will be missed by many nieces, nephews and friends. Arthur spent the majority of his working life farming, a vocation he loved. He particularly enjoyed caring for his animals, preparing the yearly supply of firewood, working in the fields and puttering around on the farm. Following a barn fire, he reluctantly gave up farming and pursued custodial work at Rockway Mennonite Collegiate and Ten Thousand Villages. He thoroughly enjoyed the new friendships he formed in these settings. As a farmer who spent his days working at home, Arthur was a strong, steady and consistent presence in the lives of his children. When grandchildren came along, he enjoyed spending time with them, taking an active interest in their lives. Arthur was an active member of Steinmann Mennonite Church, taking on varied roles over the years. A funeral service will take place at Steinmann Mennonite Church on Friday, March 11, 2022, at 3:30 p.m. with interment to follow at Steinmann Mennonite Church Cemetery. He was a twin brother to Samuel Floyd (S F) Pannabecker. He is survived by his wife Clara, of the home; one son, two daughters, and two brothers: Ray Pannabecker of Elkhart, Ind, and Carl Pannabecker of Los Gatos, Calif. His first wife, Lelia Roth Pannabecker, preceded him in death in 1956. A son, Daniel, also preceded him in death. | 6 | Culp, Jane Elizabeth (nee Simmons) 21 September 1954 - 28 January 2021 It is with the heaviest of hearts and the greatest of sorrow that the family of Jane Elizabeth Culp announce her passing from this world at the age of 66 on 28 January 2021 at Welland Hospital in Welland, Ontario. Jane was born on 21 September 1954 in Hamilton, Ontario to Douglas and Bernice Simmons, their only child. Jane is survived by her husband of 36 years, Ralph, and their two daughters, Victoria and Hilary, who will miss their Mum dearly. Jane will also be missed by her only In-laws, John and Carolyn Hay and Jane's only nephew Graham and only niece Kiersten. Jane was raised on 'the mountain' in Hamilton and attended a local elementary school, where she skipped two grades, and then Westmount Secondary School. Jane earned her Bachelor degree from McMaster University and followed that by earning her Masters degree in Comparative Literature at the University of Toronto. Upon graduation, Jane became a high school teacher at Indec North in Bramalea, Ontario for a few years until she married and moved to Manitoba to be with her new husband, Ralph. Jane endured the harsh winters of Manitoba, and later Saskatchewan, before Ralph and Jane returned back to Ontario. Jane rarely complained of the cold in Ontario after experiencing a few Manitoba and Saskatchewan winters. When Jane and Ralph returned to Vineland, Ontario, she elected to spend her time raising a family rather that returning to the teaching profession. In order to meet people in her new community, she became an Avon Lady, a task that she enjoyed for many years and where she made a number of new lifelong friends. Jane also got involved with her daughter's activities by serving a term as President of The Jordan Skating Club and volunteering with the Jordan Jets Swim Team. Jane could always be found in the arena or at the pool whenever her girls were participating. Jane was extremely proud of her family and enjoyed all activities with them. The love of family extended to her furry friends. Often called 'The Cat Lady', she was known to have had as many as 10 cats plus a dog at one time. She, also loved music, reading a good book, watching a great movie, knitting, gardening, and travelling. Over the years, she managed to visit all Canadian provinces except Newfoundland. She loved the Caribbean cruises she went on and her numerous visits to Phoenix, Arizona and Florida. Many years ago, Jane developed a muscle disease which eventually attacked her lungs and ultimately resulted in Jane requiring a double lung transplant at Toronto General Hospital. Although the new lungs performed admirably until the end, the original disease persevered and attacked the rest of her body. Jane never regretted the decision to hay e a transplant, and was eternally grateful to the surgeons that performed the procedure and to the unknown donor who allowed Jane to have a few more years of time with her family. The family would like to thank the staffs of Toronto General Hospital, E.W. Bickle Rehab Center in Toronto, Hotel Dieu Rehab Centre in St. Catharines, St. Catharines Hospital and Welland Hospital for your care and compassion in attending to Jane's needs during her various hospital stays. You are too numerous to mention individually, but your efforts were deeply appreciated. Stewart Drake and Ethel (Campbell) «i»Drake. «/i»Cliffe was a vivacious, clever; creative, handy. loving, funny, optimistic man who enjoyed gardening, cooking, driving to discover the beautiful PEI scenery and towns (he planned to drive until he was 110), meeting and conversing with the Old Order Mennonites (in their dialect) who were settling in PEI from Ontario, attending church at Faithworks Centre, studying theological roots of biblical scripture and taking in biblical teachings online. He loved his Lord, his family and friends, "helping the old people"; sending funny and upbeat text messages with animated emojis, building, all things aviation-related, classical and gospel music and so much more. He was gearing up in recent years to write his memoirs about his vast life experience and reflections. As the eldest of five children, he had many responsibilities on the family farm in St Agatha, Ontario. After completing public school, he began working various jobs, including building Hallman jacks, electric organs and wooden radiocabinets, working at Kaufman Rubber, doing construction work, and working for a funeral home. He was eager to return to school, and with only a Grade 8 education, and after scoring well on an aptitude test, was accepted at Waterloo Lutheran University (now Laurier) and graduated in 1957 with a Bachelor's degree. In 1962, he graduated from Goshen College Biblical Seminary in Indiana. While there, he obtained his pilots licence and had plans for doing missionary wor k abroad. Some of the many professional roles he held over the years included; pastor (part-time) at Hawkesville Mennonite Church, principal (part-time) at Rockway Mennonite High School, guidance counsellor and geography teacher at Grand River Collegiate, head of guidance counselling at various high schools (Cameron Heights Collegiate, Bluevale Collegiate Institute, Kitchener Collegiate Institute) between 1969 and 1987. For many summers during those years, he spent time in Toronto pursuing graduate level course work at the University of Toronto in education and theology. By the end of his years of studying, he had earned Bachelor of Arts (BA), Bachelor of Divinity (BD), Master of Education ( M Ed) degrees and was a Master of Theology (TH M) candidate. Somehow, he also managed to find time for several summers to work with his brother John Snider & sons with a major grass-cutting contract along the 401 highway, where he earned the affectionate nick name "Stayner". In his retirement years (Everyone who knew Cliffe understands that he never really retired), Cliffe enjoyed different types of employment experiences such as trucking for Detweiller Transport, helping an auctioneer with financial management. pumping gas at Petro Canada during the night shift, and most recently, staffing his stepson Darren Matheson's Trout River Pottery booth at the farmer's market in Charlottetown. From the mid-l960s to the 1980s he lived with his first wife Ethel and their children in Elmira, Ontario. There he attended Elmira Mennonite Church where he was known to lead thought-provoking adult Sunday school classes. He enjoyed spending time at the family's 2O-acre "Hobby" farm/woods in nearby Floradale, Ontario where they did organic gardening, small scale farming, chopped wood, tapped maple trees and collected antique tractors. He delighted in bringing garden produce home from the farm to Elmira and canning and preserving the harvest of delicious food to enjoy the year through. His motto was always, "Life is an Adventure". He had hope in life Eternal and didn't want people to be sad when he passed on because, as he said, "I'm going to a better place"! The funeral for Clifford Snider Jr. was held on March 31st, 2022 in New Glasgow, PEI. A memorial celebration of life-service was later held at Faithworks Centre, on July 24, 2022, followed by the interment his ashes near Charlottetown, PEI. Rest in peace, Cliffe. Her father continued his farming operations at Leader, Saskatchewan until his death in 1953. Irene moved to Toronto to study and met Adin while there. They married in 1949 and moved to Winnipeg in 1950 and Irene continued her studies in Education. In 1955 they moved to Dauphin and welcomed the birth of their son, Vernon. They moved to Medicine Hat in 1958 and son Randy was born there and the adoption of their two boys, Harvey and Terry and daughter Linda, was finalized during this time in Medicine Hat. The family returned to Manitoba in 1965. Irene taught school at Melita, Wawanesa and Shilo. In 1976 the family moved to a farm near Minto where Irene raised Angus cattle, Morgan horses, goats, chickens and turkeys. It was a returning to her roots and she loved the farm and farm life! Irene served on the local Co-op board, the Manitoba Human Rights Commission and the Manitoba Racing Commission. She was also a member of the Independent Order of Foresters. Irene was very active in politics and took a keen interest in all things political, locally and globally. She was an avid traveller and a news hound, reading numerous newspapers daily. | 22 | Obituary Surrounded by family, Orville J. Ropp died at his home in Edgewater, Fla. on Friday, Apr 28, 2006. Born in Attica, on Feb. 21, 1921, to David and Hannah Ropp, he was one of seven children born to the Mennonite couple. He served his country in WWII and upon returning from the Philippines, he married his sweetheart, Shirley Maddock. Their 59 year union produced two children: Kenneth James and Karen Sue. Orville and his brother, Irvin owned Ropp Bros. Garage in Alma. Orville and family moved to Edgewater, Fla. in 1971. In 1972 he opened Ropp's Auto Electric in New Smyrna Beach, Fla. Even while undergoing treatment, he continued to work each day and took great joy in the friendships he made there. For many years, he enjoyed bowling on the Wednesday night Men's League and New Smyrna Lanes, was an active member of the FFA Alumni and a member of hte Masonic Lodge # 149. He loved "his boys" the Atlanta Braves and watching NASCAR with his family. He was a "tinkerer" - there wasn't anything he couldn't fix. Mr. Ropp's charming personality afforded him many great friends, but most important was spending time with his family. He never missed an event in their lives. More recently he had the wonderful opportunity to enjoy his two great-grandsons, whether it was "hunting bears" or watching his best buddy, Beau, play tee-ball, he reveled in those moments. Mr. Ropp will be forever loved and deeply missed by his surviving family: Wife, Shirley; son Kenneth (Janet) of Edgewater, Fla; daughter Karen Poveromo of New Smyrna Beach, Fla; granddaughters, DeAnne (Mike) Maples of Deltona, Fla, and Debra (Thomas) Rinne of Longwood, Fla.; great-grandsons , Beau and Kyle Maples of Deltona, Fla., brothers, Clayton Ropp of Mason and Allen (Wilma) Ropp of Alma; special nephew, Greg Powers and family of Belmont; his Ropp's Auto Electric family, Joe Stranger, Greg Wilczewski, John Loyd; and his faithful four-legged companion, Carlos. Ruth was born January 27, 1921 in Wilmot Township a daughter of the late Frederick and Amelia (Miller) Leiskau. Harley was born July 31, 1920, also in Wilmot Township, a son of the late Christian and Edna (Iutzi) Herner. Harley and Ruth were lifelong residents of Baden where they owned and operated Herner Wood Products Ltd., since the 1950's. They were members of St. James Lutheran Church, Baden and enjoyed cottage life for many years at Sauble Beach. Ruth had a great sense of humor, loyally supported Harley and loved her family best! Harley loved everything "wood", built homes, cottages and furniture for many years and had been a chauffeur for Baden's Livingston family in his younger days. Ruth and Harley were married 62 years ago on October 14, 1944. Sadly missed by children, David and Colleen Herner, Gail Herner and Howard Schell, all of Baden and Beth and Ken Baer of RR 2, Wingham. They went grocery shopping together. They even had knee surgery together two years ago in Toronto. On Sunday, the elderly Baden couple died together."They were inseparable,'' said Laura Herner, one of eight grandchildren. "It's so fitting that they go together.''"Neither of them would have lasted without the other,'' said Eloise Klaehn, a family friend. "That's what they would have wanted.''The couple were coming home from visiting their daughter, Beth Bear, in Wingham when the crash occurred.They were travelling east on Perth Line 86 west of Listowel just before noon when their pickup truck crossed the centre line and went into the ditch on the west side of the highway, striking a large tree.Harley, who was driving, was pronounced dead at the scene. Ruth was sent to the London Health Sciences Centre, where she later died.Perth OPP said the road was snow-covered at the time. The cause of the crash is still under investigation, Const. Glen Childerley said yesterday.Yesterday, St. James Lutheran Church in Baden rang the church bells 173 times in memory of the long lives of Harley, who was in his 87th year, and Ruth, who was in her 86th year.The Herners were fixtures in Baden, where they'd always lived. The village wanted to show its appreciation for the couple, who always gave generously to their community.Laura Herner said she feels lucky to have had her grandparents for as long as she did. "We have so many memories,'' the 26-year-old said.At Christmas, Ruth prepared a turkey and her famous Jell-O salad for the family of about 20 people. Everyone brought a side dish and Ruth did the baking."Grandma made the best sugar cookies and cherry pie,'' Laura said.Each day, Harley still went to work shortly after 6 a.m. even though he'd already passed the business reigns to his son, David.Herner Wood Products Ltd., on Snyder's Road in Baden, opened in 1950 and Harley rarely missed a day.Ruth prepared lunch every Saturday and brought it to the store.As a young man, Harley, worked for J & J Livingston, which later became the Dominion Linseed Oil Co.For 11 years, Harley worked as a driver-salesperson, distributing products across Ontario.He was also the personal driver for factory owner J.P. Livingston, transporting the boss around in a Cadillac.On occasion, Harley brought Ruth along. Livingston would often slip Harley a $20 to spend with Ruth. When the couple got married in October 1944, Livingston gave them $200.Shortly after, Harley, a carpenter by trade, left to start his own business.Klaehn said the Herners had a special bond that few couples have.At the celebration of their 60th anniversary two years ago, the couple held hands the whole time. "It was very romantic,'' she said.A private funeral service will be held at the Mark Jutzi Funeral Home in New Hamburg tonight. Fifteen years later with his parents, brothers and sisters, he moved into the farm adjoining Hespeler. On March 22, 1871 he married Mary Ann Master and took up residence on part of the homestead. She died in 1890, leaving a sorrowing husband and eight children. Twelve years before his death he married Mrs. McCready of Hespeler, who was spared to be a helpmate in time of health and watched over him with tender care in his last days.Mary Ann Master, of German origin, daughter of Abraham C. Master and Lucinda Clemons, was born in Waterloo Township on October 20, 1848. Mary Ann died March 26, 1890 and is buried in the New Hope Cemetery in Cambridge (Hespeler), Ontario. Both Mary Ann and Wesley were Methodists."Mr. Eaton took no part in public affairs, was looked upon as an excellent farmer, and as a neighbor he was as such in its fullest term."In the 1891 census, Wesley was shown as able to read and write and he was a widower. His family consisted of himself, Iantha, Herbert, Viletta (Violet?), Elmina, Alice, Morice (Morris), and Lloyd.In the 1901 census, Wesley was shown as white and able to read, write and speak English. His mother tongue was English. Living with Wesley was his second wife, Elizabeth, her daughters Jane and Alice McCready (McCradie) and his sons Morris (Morice) and Stanley.Wesley Eaton died of heart disease on Dec 23, 1907 in Hespeler, Ontario. | 32 | From Reynolds-Lake Website http://www.reynolds-lake.com/Christopher Meschter, son of Gregorius and Maria Meisther, acquired his father's farm in Hereford Twp., PA. and he also bought other land which he conveyed to his son Christopher for 1200 pounds. He married Christina Yeakel on May 6, 1766 and had ten children between 1767 and 1787. Their first five children all died before the age of five, their sixth, Regina, married to Daniel Yocom, died at age 23 and the remaining four children all lived into the 1850's. During the war for independence he was a member of Captain Daniel Springer's Company of Militia which was a part of the Fifth Battalion of Pennsylvania troops.Christopher Meschter died in February 1791 and, as are his parents, is buried in Washington Schwenkfelder Cemetery. His will was signed on Feb. 8, 1791. His widow was left with five children and a petition was made to the court to appoint guardians. John George Lahr and Isaac Zigler were appointed guardians for the three minor children. His widow, Christina, married Jacob Hunsberger in April, 1794. On May 27, 1799, Christina Hunsberger received 49 pounds 2s. 4d., the balance of money willed her by her first husband. In signing her name she made "her mark." | Family F15205

Mr. Shantz is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Shantz, RR 1, Hespeler. Sprays of pink rosettes and white and pink streamers decorat- ed the home. The ceremony was peformed by Rev. Wilfred Ulrich and recordings of traditional wed- ding selections were played by Mr. Kenneth Witmer, brother of the bride, during the signing of the register. A navy frock of triple sheer, with touches of white lace and rhinestones was worn by the bride. She wore a navy Dutch style cap with pink floral trim and a corsage of pink roses. Mrs. Edward Schiedel, Hespeler, sister of the bride, was her attend- ant, wearing an ensemble similar to the bride's costume. Mr. Schied- el, cousin of the bridegroom, was best man. Twenty-five guests attended the reception. The bride's mother wore a figured silk frock with white ac- cessories and corsage of lily-of-the- valley. Navy and white printed sheer was worn by the bride- groom's mother. Her corsage was of baby tulips. For travelling in Rochester and other points in the United States, the bride topped her costume with a white shortie coat. They will live at 102 Kent Ave., Kitchener. | Family F9068

| 42 | Nicholas D. Roth The death of a former well- known resident of East Zorra occurred on Friday, April 2nd, when Mr. Nicholas D. Roth pass- ed away at the home of his brother-in-law, Mr. Chris. Wag- ler, in South Easthope, at the age of 72 years, 11 months and 19 days. He had been in ill health for some time and spent two weeks in the K.-W. Hospital, returning some weeks ago, since which time he had been confined to bed the late Mr. Roth was born in East Zorra, a son of the late Nichlas L. Roth. Forty-three years ago he married Mary Wag- ler and they resided on farms in South Easthope and on the East Zorra townline until 1922, when they moved to Clarence, New York State. Owing to ill health he returned to South Easthope three years ago and resided with his wife's mother until his more serious illness overtook him. There are left in bereavement his widow, four sons, Emanuel, of Wilmot, Noah of Wellesley, Amos of Clarence, N.Y., Daniel of To- peka, Indiana, and four daugh- ters, Mrs. Ben Riegsecker, Middle- burg, Ind., Mrs. E. Schwartzen- truber, Wilmot, Mrs. Alvin Mil- ler and Mrs Eli Bontrager, Clar- ence, N.Y. He is also survived by two brothers, Jacob D. Roth, of South Easthope, and Christian D. Roth of Cassel, and four sisters, Mrs. David Ries, Mornington, Mrs. John Gascho, Elkton, Mich., Mrs. Joseph Kropf, Wilmot, and Mrs. Dan Jutzi, East Zorra. The funeral was held on Sun- day afternoon from the home of his brother-in-law, Mr. Chris. Wagler, to 16th line East Zorra A.-M. Church for service follow- ed by interment in the adjoining cemetery. A large concourse of sorrowing relatives and friends assembled for the funeral ser- vices, which were conducted by Rev. M. Kipfer, Rev. Jacob R. Bender and Rev. B. Gingerich. Howard Stevanus of Bloomingdale, officiated today in Cressman Mennonite Church at the marriage of Miss Eunice Cressman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Cressman, R.R. 2, Breslau, and Mr. Roy Burkhart, son of Mrs. Iren Burkhart of Bridgeport and the late Herbert Burkhart. The church was decorated with baskets of white gladioli. Special music was provided by Misses Helen, Nelda and Arlene Musselman, Edith and Doreen Shantz and Eunice Snider. The bride, given in marriage by her father, was wearing a white embroidered organdy gown, made with high, round ruffled neckline, long lily-point sleeves and full gath- ered skirt. She carried a crescent bouquet of white gladioli florets set in a white net. Attending her as maid of honor was her sister, Miss Verna Cress- man, in a blue printed lawn gown. The bridesmaids, Misses Doris Burkhart, sister of the bridegroom and Florence Cressman, cousin of the bride, were gowned alike in pink printed lawn. All three gowns were styled like the bride's and the senior attendant's bouquets were of white gladioli florets and pink roses with net frills matching their dresses. Flower girl was Miss Marlene Cressman, niece of the bride, attir- ed in blue printed lawn and carry- ing a nosegay of pink dahlia nad white asters. Mr. Ralph Shantz of Alma per- formed the duties of best man, while Messrs. James Brubaker of Vineland and Lyle Woolner of Pet- ersburg ushered. After the ceremony, guests were received at the home of the bride's parents. Mrs. Cressman and Mrs. Burkhart both wore navy crepe en- sembles with corsages of sunglow roses. They had three children, Morely Neville, Elma Masie, and Ethel Ruth. Ethel died as an infant.Elmina (Ella) was born on August 2, 1879 in Hespeler, daughter of Wesley Eaton and Mary Ann Master. She was a lifelong resident of Hespeler.Harry died on October 19, 1952 in Hespeler of a coronary thrombosis. Ella died on August 16, 1950, also in Hespeler, of euremia.
