- Information on the descendants of David and Susannah is taken from several sources. First of all, THE GOOD FAMILY RECORD by Ruth L. Good. Date of publication is unknown at this time. Another source of information is David and Susannah's obituaries published in the Herald Of Truth in 1864 and 1884 respectively. Ruth Good acknowledges in her work that there are conflicting birth and death dates for David and Susannah. The birth and death dates used in this record are arrived at in the following way. I have accepted the death dates as printed in the Herald of Truth as correct. David is reported as having died on Mar. 16, 1864 having reached the age of 59 years, 11 months and 24 days. That would mean he was born Mar. 22, 1804.In her obituary in the Herald of Truth, Susannah is said to have died on Sept. 10, 1884 at the age of 85 years, 1 month and 4 days. That would mean she was born on Aug. 6, 1799.Ruth Good states in the GOOD FAMILY RECORD that David's tombstone reads that he died on Mar. 16, 1861 while Susannah's tombstone reads that she died Sept. 10, 1881. The discrepancy between the reported tombstone dates and the obituary accounts is easy to explain. The person who read the tombstones didn't realize that with time the number 4 on the tombstone has worn down in the elements and now appears as a 1. This is a very common dilemna facing anyone who takes information from a grave marker. The vertical stroke of the number 4 was etched heavier and deeper than the other parts of the number. So it would seem that the death dates for David and Susannah can be accepted as being in 1864 and 1884. If the writer of the obituaries did the math correctly as to their ages in years, months and days (all too many times the math was done incorrectly), then the birthdates would be correct as stated in this record.
