Schlichter - Harriet Elizabeth Bates was born in the township of Lenox, Macomb county, Michigan, Oct. 27, 1863. She was married to Allan B. Schlichter in the city of Lapeer, Nov. 29 (Thanksgiving day) 1888, and soon after the marriage went with her husband to San Angelo, Texas.
They returned to Michigan in the spring of 1889, and lived in Lapeer and Sanilac counties about 17 years. Since April 2, 1906, they have made their home in the township and in the city of Gladwin. She died of pleuro-pneumonia, at her home in the city of Gladwin, Nov. 30 (Thanksgiving day) 1916.
She was a woman of high ideals, always on the right side of every moral question, active and energetic in support of her principles, and uncompromising in her opposition to every evil. In the local option campaign that made Gladwin "dry" she toured the county with her husband, taking an active part in the work, giving addresses in numerous places and otherwise doing all she could to help the good cause win. She was very sympathetic and always a leader in caring for the sick, comforting the bereaved and aiding the unfortunate, was a member of the Woman's Temperance Union, the Grange, and the Ancient Order of Gleaners, and has held official positions in some of the societies. She did all she could to promote the welfare of her family and instilled into her children the lofty principles for which they are known to stand.
Her husband, three daughters, Mrs. Ethel Spike and Miss Alora Schlichter of Gladwin, and Mrs. Gertrude Liebler, of Royal Oak, and two sons, Ward and Clark, of Gladwin, survive to mourn her loss. One son and one daughter, Verne and Norine, passed to the heavenly world in early childhood. Three brothers, William O. Bates and Clark E. Bates of Grand Rapids, and George E. Bates of Orion, also remain to mourn the loss of their only sister.
Services were held at the house Sunday morning at 10:30 and at the Methodist Episcopal church at 11, conducted by Rev. J. H. Cornelieus. Prayer was offered by Rev. W. W. Chatfield of McClure. Interment took place in the Ridge cemetery. Music was rendered by Messrs., F. L. Ballard, W.H. Dawe, Mrs. R. B. Mark and Miss May Ballard, Mrs. C. M. Crawford, organist, friends of the family. The following friends of the family also were in attendance from a distance: Amos Detweiler, George Burkholder, Allen Witmer and Mrs. Charles Wilson of Brown City; Frank Kimmel of Saginaw; Samuel Burch of Moore's Junction.
